How can you preserve your culture in a melting pot of cultures?

This question is important with global migration due to wars, natural disasters, and violence in so many places in the world. Now we all hunger to discover our DNA, our heritage, our origins. It's human nature to want to trace back our ancestry.

Join Suhein Beck in this episode as she invites brother Yusef and sister Maza Eshak to discuss how and why they are working so hard to preserve our ancient Circassian / Adighe Culture here in Southern California, USA.

A special tribute to their father, Zuher Eshak Melgoush, with appreciation & encouragement for them to keep inspiring the NEXT generation to HOLD THE KEY OF CULTURE onward!

**Circassians were expelled by the Russians after a150+/- years of war/genocide in the Caucasus Mountains of Southern Russia between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. The fear of extinction has driven Circassians around the world to a passionate obsession of holding on to their heritage. Since May 21, 1864, Circassians have thrived all over the Mideast, Europe, America, and Australia and have proven to be resilient in spirit and keeping their fundamental traditions alive.

This video proves the Circassian spirit is still vibrant and continues.

Suhein Beck presents this episode as a testimony of human nature's innate need to identify our roots. We can roam the earth freely, but there is always some form of pull-back in our souls to self-reflect.

Please share your thoughts about YOUR culture and what you enjoy of your own history...

The Circassian flag (Adyge nyp) is the national flag of the Circassians. It consists of a green cloth decorated with twelve golden stars, nine of which form an arc resembling a bow, and three horizontal ones, also decorated with three crossed arrows in the center. According to one theory, Seferbiy Zanoko, a Circassian diplomat, is the author of the flag. Circassians celebrate Circassian Flag Day on April 25 every year. Currently, this version of the flag is officially used by the Republic of Adygea of the Russian Federation.
The green color represents nature and Islam. The golden color represents a bright future in the world and an abundance of grain and wheat crops. The twelve stars symbolize the twelve provinces of Circassia. The three arrows symbolize the Adyghe khabze, meaning "peace if you are my friend, and war if you attack me."

David Urquhart, as he himself claimed, was the creator of this flag, but no evidence of his words has been found. The Circassian flag was mentioned and described by the traveler Edmund Spencer in 1830

The first copy of the flag was personally presented by British delegate James Stanislaus Bell to Nur Muhammad Hagur in the Gesh Valley (on the territory of modern Sochi). A council was held in the Psefabe Valley, attended by representatives of Circassian tribes, at which the flag was presented and adopted. Then Hirtsijiko Ale raised the flag to the cheers of the Circassian commanders and many people.

The Circassian people have been using this flag since its first appearance, including during the Russian-Circassian war. The flag is considered one of the symbols of the Circassian people all over the world. This flag was also used by Circassians in the Circassian diaspora, who held various positions.

The very best way to preserve food is freeze drying. Freeze drying is able to keep all of the nutrients since it removes the water from food at freezing temperatures, instead of using heat. Plus, freeze drying is easy and allows you to preserve all your favorite foods – fruits, vegetables, leftovers, soups, casseroles, you name it. And all of it will last years longer than either dehydrated or canned food.

If you’re looking for the very best way to preserve food for you and your family, you’re going to love the Harvest Right freeze dryer. Learn more at https://harvestright.com/

There are so many reasons to freeze dry at home with a Harvest Right freeze dryer. Preserve your garden produce, create the perfect emergency food supply, make camping meals and healthy snacks. Unlike other methods of food preservation, freeze drying does not shrink or toughen the food, and retains flavor, color, and nutrition.

Refrigerated, frozen, and canned food just don’t last very long. Freeze dried food will last up to 25 years and does not need to be to be rotated like other foods. Freeze dried food is perfect for home storage.

Freeze drying maintains 97% of the nutritional value of the food. Other methods of preservation, such as canning and dehydrating, use high temperatures that destroy much of the food value.

Freeze drying works great for fruits and vegetables, but unlike other options, it also perfectly preserves meat, fish, dairy, eggs, ice cream, and even fully-cooked meals.

If you can press a button, you can freeze dry! Simply press start on the touch screen, and the patented Smart Freeze technology senses when it’s done. Everything is automatic.

Not only will the food you freeze dry at home look and taste better than store-bought freeze-dried food, it’s much less expensive! Freeze dry all of your leftover meals, and you’ll save even more money.

There's a fairly common misconception that the terms "dehydrated food" and "freeze-dried food" are the same, but clearly are not. Knowing the difference helps when deciding how to store and preserve food for your family.

Freeze drying is a relatively modern process. Freeze-dried foods offer a longer shelf life, lower moisture content, and generally taste better than dehydrated or canned foods. Freeze-dried foods rehydrate faster and also retain their original shape, texture, and color. A far greater variety of foods can be freeze dried than can be dehydrated or canned. Imagine trying to use a home dehydrator to preserve an ice cream sandwich, a raw egg, or cheese. It would fail miserably. Not so with freeze dried.

Documentary film “The Man from Psibe Village” on the Circassian settlement of Psibe in Shapsughia in westernmost Circassia, made in 1972.

Director: Gennady Kraskov
Operator: Yuri Musatov
Produced by: Rostov Newsreel Studio
Year: 1972

The film is about the work of the rural postman X’useyn Achmiz (Ацумыжъ), a resident of the Circassian village of Psebe (Псыбэ [Psibe], in Circassian), “in the Adigean Autonomous Oblast”. It depicts the life in a (Shapsugh) Circassian village in the early 1970s. Although the village Psebe is billed as being in the Adigean Autonomous Oblast, it is actually in the Shapsugh Region, to the north of the town of Tuapse. Psibe (Псыбэ) literally means “Water Abundant” in Circassian. It has a population of a few hundreds, mainly Circassians. The number of villagers has been decreasing in the past few decades.

It is hoped that the Shapsugh Region would be joined to the Republic of Adigea for the benefit of both the Adigeans and Shapsugh. Adigea would then have access to the Black Sea, and the Shapsugh would benefit from the Circassian language and culture institutions in Adigea, which would stem the rising tide of assimilation.

Scenes:

• Postman X’useyn Achmiz travels with his horse across the Shapsugh countryside. He knows every nook and cranny in this ancient land of the Shapsugh Circassians.
• View of the Psibe village in the Shapsugh Region (in westernmost Circassia).
• The postman goes through the village, handing out letters and telegrams to villagers.
• The villagers are dancing, talking.
• Pioneers lay flowers at the monument to those killed in the Great Patriotic War (World War II).
• New-born baby is blessed by the elders, in accordance with ancient Circassian customs.
• Postman Achmiz takes part in “sch’ihafi” [«шIыхьафы»], an ancient Circassian custom whereby the residents of a village assemble to build or fix a house for or needy family on a voluntary basis.
• Postman hands a woman a “talking letter”. She listens to it on a record-player. “I am alive and kicking, and doing alright. My work is also going well! ...”
• Road construction near Psibe connecting to Adigea. Cars drive on the road.
• View of the village Psebe.
• Postman X’useyn Achmiz travelling on a treacherous mountain path.

The Druze and the Circassians of Israel are two minority groups that are well-integrated into Israeli society and are an integral part of it, all while cultivating their unique traditions.
The 134,000 followers of the Druze faith settled in Israel during the 11th Century. They populate 22 villages in the north of the country, maintaining their distinct religion, culture and community life.
Sunni Muslims originally from the Caucasus, the Circassians arrived in the Galilee (northern Israel) during the 19th Century. Today, there are about 4,000 Circassians living mainly in the villages of Kfar Kama and Rehaniya.
