Circassian youth today are the most impacted by the ubiquity of globalization, as they are
immersed in diverse societies and cultures that play a significant role in shaping their unique
identities. Hence, it is no surprise that Circassian youth living
in the diaspora face several challenges in attaining and/or
preserving their Circassian identity. Prior to enacting solutions
to help connect youth with their Circassian identities, it is vital
to listen to their concerns and understand their challenges.

Cv DANA RAJAB and TANYA YENAM

Dana Rajab is a first-year medical student at the Queen’s University School of Medicine in Ontario,
Canada. She graduated with a Bachelors of Life Sciences from McMaster University in June 2021. In her undergraduate years, she gained experience conducting both quantitative and qualitative research. Her interests include accessibility, teaching, global health, and working with vulnerable populations.

Taya Yenam is a fourth-year student at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada. She is majoring in Legal Studies and aims to pursue a graduate degree in Cybercrime and Surveillance
studies. She currently works as an Adjudicator at an Insurance company and a Research Assistant in the field of legal sociology. Her interests include cybercrime, privacy law and Intellectual Property
law.

2. Shehshan:
Shehshan means the horse personality. And what is dearer to a knight’s heart than his horse? Imitating his moves, his walk, his posture, it is his companion in peace and war. Shehshan is a dance preserved by Circassians in diaspora, they mastered it and its melodies, so it became the title of preserving Circassian history and culture in diaspora.

Tea is the most consumed beverage in the world after water. Drinking tea has health benefits due to its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and weight loss benefits. It also has cultural significance in many societies.

With Circassians moving to live in different countries, some replaced the herb “Kalmehk Shai” with regular tea herb that is prepared in the old method using what is known as “Samovar”, which is a large copper tea pot in which water and the rest of the ingredients are placed. The pot is then placed over coal or firewood to bring the tea to a boil, then serve.

Circassians have now developed their tea-making method by using two tea pots placed on top of each other, the tea is boiled in the top pot and the bottom pot is filled with water used to dilute the tea according to preference.

Circassian tea is served without sugar, but along with special Circassian sweets and pastries including "Al Hafa", delicious pastry stuffed with Circassian cheese and does not contain salt or potatoes, and "Laqum", pastry with sugar. Some serve walnuts, raisins, dried apricots and honey with the tea instead of sugar to add a sweet taste.

Ya'll know I LOVE a thrifty project, and wedding gowns have such a stigma for being expensive! I know this won't be everyone's cup of tea, but a wedding gown can be as fancy or casual as you like! That's the beauty of it being your own wedding. I do wish I would have had a model, but I made this dress in such a quick turnaround, so I had NO time! Would have loved to see how drape the sleeves were, and that little shoulder moment.... next time! ha!
