"The Ethnic Origins of Beauty" (Les origines de la beauté) is a non-profit, artistic, documentary and research project about the ethnic diversity of mankind, presented through the beauty of women of all ethnic groups of the world.
The objectif of this project is to show the real scale of ethnocultural diversity in a full, systematic and creative way; to illustrate each and every distinctive ethnicity, however small it is, and whatever its official status.
The project “The Ethnic Origins of Beauty” received the acknowledgment of UNESCO and was first officially presented at an exhibition devoted to international women’s day in March 2014, at its Parisian headquarters.
The project started in 2012, but it is only in the early stages of its realisation and in constant need of help. We would appreciate any kind of support, cooperation or partnership.

This Black Music Month, Tiny Desk is giving the ladies their flowers. We’re releasing nine Tiny Desk concerts from Black women artists, from veterans who’ve paved the way for what we hear today in Black music, to those who are carving out their own paths.
Bobby Carter | June 28, 2024
We conclude 2024’s Black Music Month celebration at the Tiny Desk with the catalyst for the all-female lineup, SWV. Year after year, I’ve begged who I consider the greatest girl group ever to come play the Desk. Like the other Black women we’ve hosted this month, SWV has yet to receive the proper acknowledgment for its influence over the past three decades. There was a moment, similar to the sing-along portion of Chaka Khan’s show, when Coko, Taj and Lelee were taken aback while the audience kept the party going after the band stopped playing “I’m So Into You.”
Sisters With Voices originated in the church before the group started recording R&B music. It broke through in the 1990s, a decade that was the pinnacle of girl groups. In a landscape including En Vogue, TLC, Xscape and dozens more, SWV remained in front of the pack, topping the charts, amassing gold and platinum plaques and breaking new ground in music, style and sexual liberation. Before playing “You’re The One,” Lelee introduced the song, reminding us that they “kinda took a beating for the team because our music was a little risqué.”
As a new appreciation for ’90s R&B has emerged over the past several years, SWV has reigned supreme. Watching the audience sway and sing to songs like “Weak” and “Rain,” I’m reminded of the lasting quality of SWV that continues to connect us.

(29 Jul 2015) LEAD-IN:
A group of Circassian dancers and musicians is using culture to protect their heritage.
The New Generation Club is performing at the Jerash Music Festival in Jordan.
STORY-LINE:
This is traditional Circassian dress and dance.
The dancers move around the stage at speed.
The Jordanian group, the New Generation Club is presenting five traditional dances at the Jerash Music Festival.
They're highlighting their culture to try to protect it from assimilation, two centuries since they were forced from their homes.
Through music, dance, traditional clothes and recipes, the Circassian diaspora work to preserve and protect their heritage despite living as minorities across the world.
"I say the most important thing is to present our culture and civilisation," says dancer Awni Webkh.
"It is very important that more people get to know our culture because we are a people who fled their country because of a war. Dancing is one way we can share that history for people to see."
The Circassians originate from Russia's North Caucasus.
They were mostly driven out of their homeland in the Caucasus after a brutal, multi-generational war pitting the Muslim mountaineers against Tsarist Russia in the 18th and 19th centuries.
Many relocated to areas across the Middle East including what is now Jordan.
The Circassian community was one of the first of the young Jordanian state, and they served in powerful positions within the army and government, including as the royal palace guards.
Dancer, Nadine Libzu, says her style of dance is a cultural symbol that represents her traditions and history.
"There are many different Circassian dances, there's fast and slow, but for me I prefer the slow dance because it is the most magnificent. It expresses magnificence and gentleness," she says.
Circassian accordion player and composer, Anzaur Mish is proud to present his culture to those gathered at the festival.
"Even if they don't speak our language, the beauty of our culture can reach them. If you want to know why, it is because our songs are unique and beautiful."
An estimated two million Circassians live in Turkey, another 100,000 in Syria and other sizable populations are in Jordan and the United States. But their sense of ethnic unity remains strong and the pull of their homeland is compelling.
Of an estimated 3.7 million ethnic Circassians around the world, close to 100,000 are living in Jordan today, according to the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organisation (UNPO).

This really Got me offguard, I almost thought he was insulting me at first 😅🤷🏼♂️ that’s why it’s so important to be open for different cultures to be different than ourselves and not judge, but try to understand.
If we start an interaction by judging , then we will always find most people from other cultures to be “insulting”, “bad mannered”, “weird”, “disgusting” etc.. But if we first try to understand their culture, understand their way of eating, their way of interacting, then, 100% of the times I end up falling in love with their culture, and I learn something new and fascinating 🙌✨
Also, I always find so interesting how after you notice one thing, you can’t stop seeing it everywhere!
Now that I noticed this Turkish feature 🇹🇷 it’s so much easier to understand them when they speak, because most of the time they do this signs while they speak, so even if I don’t know Turkish, I can understand what they say by reading their signs 🙌
But I have to say this is a feature of the people who live in Turkey, but many of the people in this video are not actually from Turkish descent, but Kurdish, Assyrian, Arab and also Turkish 🇹🇷
This country is spectacular 🙌🫶

(17 Feb 2014) While Olympic spectators watch the Winter Games in gleaming arenas, boys in nearby Bolshoi Kichmai herd their goats by tying them to rickety bicycles, riding through a rocky valley where their ancestors fiercely resisted the Russian Czarist conquest.
Circassians, a Muslim ethnic group, say the Russian Army committed genocide against their ancestors and exiled them from Sochi from 1860 to 1864.
Russia has denied the charges of genocide.
Members of the Circassian diaspora from New Jersey to Turkey and Israel have protested, arguing that Sochi Olympic skiing and other events are being staged on the blood of their forebears.
Russia's most prominent militant, Doku Umarov, has also adopted the Circassians' cause.
In a warning last year, the Chechen rebel leader urged Muslim extremists to target the Games.
Activists say Umarov's threat has provided Russian security services with a pretext to increase document checks and pressure on women wearing headscarves and men with long beards across the Caucasus.
However Circassians living in villages sprinkled through the Sochi region insist they are peaceful and have nothing to do with Umarov's threat.
Aisa Achmizov, who runs the small folk art museum in Bolshoi Kichmai, hopes the Olympics will bring in more visitors.
"This is a huge breakthrough, and not only for me, but for our children," he said.
Circassians in Bolshoi Kichmai, struggle to get by on tourism in a town with few amenities, just a few dozen kilometres from Olympic events but a world away from their glory.
Firewood is the primary fuel for many families.
But water is running short, after a company building railroads for the Olympic project hauled away huge amounts of gravel from the Shakhe river, disrupting its flow through the town.
Achmizov said businessmen and authorities took too much gravel, more than was necessary.
"We were against it. We closed the road for them here, but still they look for the way to get here," he said.
Residents filed a lawsuit against the company, but are still waiting for results.
The No Sochi campaign (www.nosochi2014.com), launched by exiled Circassians, wants Russian authorities to recognise what happened in 1864 as a genocide, to allow Circassians from around the world to move back to ancestral lands, and an end to de facto quotas for Circassians in local police, government and other positions.
Amid the pressure, regional authorities belatedly acknowledged that the Olympic sites are on what was once Circassian land, and Olympic organisers hastily erected a Circassian House in Olympic Park.
President Vladimir Putin however, has dismissed Circassian protests abroad as a tool in a campaign against Russia's global influence.
Bolshoi Kichmai's residents meanwhile, are leading their lives as if the Olympics weren't happening just a few valleys away.
Beekeeper Khamed Komzh shrugs when asked about how history has treated his people.
"Well, what can we do? It is done. God will be their judge."

Circassian beauties, or Moss-haired girls as they were sometimes known, reflect a curious legacy of racial stereotyping and sexual titillation. Racial theories of the mid 19th century held that the people living in the Circassian mountains near the Black Sea were examples of the purest stock of the Caucasian race. Legend had it that the Circassians produced the worlds most beautiful white women, who were consequently in great demand for the harems of Turkish sultans.
The long shadow of slavery can also be discerned in this hybrid depiction. American audiences were both intrigued and horrified, given their false association of slavery with Africans, by the fact that Circassian women were among the most sought-after concubines in the Sultans harem - hence the need to make them appear somewhat African. Both African slaves and Circassian slaves were subject to sexual exploitation and this is the point of contact that played so powerfully on white Americans imagination, wrote philosophy professor Gregory Fried.
