The Caucasus was runner-up in my patron poll, and then it won in the rematch. So, it's time we travel to this mountainous region and explore its complicated linguistic situation.
We go through major languages, family by family, briefly meeting Indo-European languages like Armenian and Kurdish, Turkic ones like Azeri, and even a Mongolic tongue named Kalmyk Oirat. Then, we see how linguists draw a line between "languages of the Caucasus" and the indigenous "Caucasian languages".
The Caucasian languages fall in three families: Northeast Caucasian, Northwest Caucasian, and Kartvelian in the south. Explore some of their intriguing features, including massive numbers of consonants and one of the earliest documented examples of something called "ergativity".
Despite some similar features, these languages don't belong to the same family. In fact, they may not even be a true "linguistic area"!
At the end, we're still left with the question: why so many languages? We'll consider how one linguist looks at the relationship between geography and the lives of language families.

The Circassian Home Museum, founded by the researcher and historian Adnan Bazadiq in Zarqa city, east of Jordan’s capital, Amman, is one of the few museums in the world that collects items representing the life of Circassians. The museum reflects the history of the Circassians, ancient customs, contemporary life, culture, food, and professions.
The museum consists of several sections containing rare documentaries, artistic and cultural films of this ethnic group, as well as large black and white photographs of Circassian figures hanging on the walls. Many years ago, Adnan Bazadok began researching and archiving everything related to Circassians in the world and turned his house into a Circassian heritage museum visited by many Jordanians and foreigners to learn about their history and culture. About 200 thousand Circassians live in Jordan, according to unofficial figures. Circassians came to Jordan in 1878, after Tsarist Russia displaced them during the Caucasus War. They live in Amman and Zarqa, enjoy all rights, and hold Jordanian citizenship since the establishment of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

1864 - The Circassian Tragedy
Jonty Yamisha is a language activist, an "accidental polyglot" in his own words, a "third-generation Circassian refugee," and the founder of OptiLingo, an audio-based language app that uses "guided immersion" to help people reach fluency in foreign languages more quickly. We discuss the Circassian language and cultural history, how he's raising his children bilingually, and how he "steals back" time for language learning amid his busy professional and family life.

Continue Part 2 of CaucasTalk Podcast interview with Suhein Beck, a Circassian born in Syria. Follow her story as she launched her grandfather's medical formula into a skincare company, ELAJ into the global market.
This podcast is set among beautiful pictures and clips of the North Caucasus, the hidden treasure of the Euro-Asian Steppes that has been the home of the ancient civilization of Circassians - the Adighe People. Whether it's called Kavkaz, Cherkassia, Circassia or the North Caucasus, it is our land and we fought over 100 years until the final day that we still commemorate as May 21, 1864. It was then we were exiled after a long-standing genocide killed over 1 million of our ancestors. This episode talks about those of us that were exiled from our homeland.

The Circassian Beauties 19th century:
Imagine the 19th century, a time when the allure of the exotic beckoned from the heart of the Caucasus—the realm of the Circassian Beauties. Envision a group of women, their features strikingly European, discovered in the mysterious folds of the Circassian region. Their presence gives rise to whispers and tales, sparking fascination and wonder.
Were these women captives torn from their homelands, refugees seeking sanctuary, or symbols of a beauty shrouded in the mystique of the unknown? The Circassian Beauties become not just individuals but embodiments of an era where the enigmatic met the captivating, and their stories echo through the corridors of time, inviting us to peer into a bygone world where beauty was draped in the intrigue of the unexplained.
Circassian is a language in the Northwestern Caucasian branch of Caucasian languages. Circassian people call their language Adyghebze or Adyghabze.
Circassian Circle is an English Country Dance published by Chivers in 1822 (The Handbook of Modern Dancing). But the earliest description I was able to copy was in Wilson of 1852 (The Art of Dancing). https://www.google.co.uk/books..../edition/The_Art_of_
This is a Scottish version which first appeared in RSCDS Book 1 in 1924 (one of the first dozen Scottish Country Dances).
This appears to be the original name for what we now call a "Sicilian Circle". Today we think of it as a way of dancing in a circle rather than longways that can be applied to almost any minor set dance. But once upon a time there was an actual dance of that name.
The animation plays at 120 counts per minute normally, but the first time through the set the dance is slowed down so people can learn the moves more readily. Men are drawn as rectangles, women as ellipses. Each couple is drawn in its own color, however the border of each dancer indicates what role they currently play so the border color may change each time through the minor set.

May 21, 1864; It is the symbolic date of systematic genocide carried out to Circassians. During this genocide by Tsarist Russia, hundreds of thousands of Circassians died, while ninety percent of the surviving Circassian population was exiled to the Ottoman Empire.
Today, we are speaking as a child of a generation who survived from the Circassian Genocide:
RECOGNIZE THE GENOCIDE!
Today we are angry as a Circassian.
Because; despite the Circassian Genocide took over 155 years, there is not a single step taken by Russia to compensate for the injustice we have suffered.
Russia still continues to implement its colonial policies in the Caucasus.
Although the regime changes, the Russian state is still acting with the motto “A Circassia without the Circassians, a Caucasus without the Caucasians”.
Against these policies, we raise our voice wherever Circassians live:
MAY21 CONTINUE!
Today we are angry and we have a word to the state of Russia, who ignores us for even the most basic demands in our homeland.
Despite all the colonial policies you have implemented and manipulation attempts
WE DID NOT EXTINCT, WE WILL NOT BE!
We are standing against your attempts to distort the history and ignore the Circassian people and the the tragedy we had:
21 MAY IS THE DAY OF THE DEFIANCE!
We speak to the peoples of the world and the conscientious people of Russia; don't take part in your state's crimes
RECOGNIZE THE GENOCIDE!
Despite all our suffering, trauma and human rights violations, we are not aiming to revive historical hostilities. We raise our demand for justice.
IF THERE IS NO JUSTICE, THERE IS NO PEACE!
We declare that we will never forget the Circassian Genocide and the perpetrator of this genocide.
RECOGNIZE THE MAY21 CIRCASSIAN GENOCIDE!
