1864 - The Circassian Tragedy

The Caucasian War of 1763–1864 was an invasion of the Caucasus by the Russian Empire which resulted in Russia's annexation of the areas of the North Caucasus, and the ethnic cleansing of Circassians. It consisted of a series of military actions waged by the Empire against the peoples of the Caucasus including the Adyghe, Abkhaz–Abaza, Ubykhs, Kumyks and Nakh and Dagestanians as Russia sought to expand. In Dagestan, resistance to the Russians was described as jihad.

Russian control of the Georgian Military Highway in the center divided the Caucasian War into the Russo-Circassian War in the west and the Murid War in the east. Other territories of the Caucasus (comprising contemporary eastern Georgia, southern Dagestan, Armenia and Azerbaijan) were incorporated into the Russian empire at various times in the 19th century as a result of Russian wars with Persia. The remaining part, western Georgia, was taken by the Russians from the Ottomans during the same period.

The alleged Circassian genocide ostensibly happened during the Russo-Circassian War, conducted in Circassia (present day Russia's Krasnodar Krai, republics of Adygea and Karachay-Cherkessia), the northwestern part of the Caucasus. The war ended in 1864 with annexation of these lands to the Russian Empire. During the 1860s much of the Circassian population was expelled from their lands. Historians site figures as large as 500,000 and greater. A large fraction of them died in transit. This expulsion and other actions of the Russian military has given rise to a movement for international recognition of the alleged genocide.

The Circassian Beauties 19th century:

Imagine the 19th century, a time when the allure of the exotic beckoned from the heart of the Caucasus—the realm of the Circassian Beauties. Envision a group of women, their features strikingly European, discovered in the mysterious folds of the Circassian region. Their presence gives rise to whispers and tales, sparking fascination and wonder.

Were these women captives torn from their homelands, refugees seeking sanctuary, or symbols of a beauty shrouded in the mystique of the unknown? The Circassian Beauties become not just individuals but embodiments of an era where the enigmatic met the captivating, and their stories echo through the corridors of time, inviting us to peer into a bygone world where beauty was draped in the intrigue of the unexplained.
