-----circassians------
The Circassians (also referred to as Cherkess or Adyghe; Adyghe: Адыгэхэр, romanized: Adıgəxər; Kabardian: Адыгэхэр, romanized: Adıgəxər) are an indigenous ethnic group and nation native to the historical country-region of Circassia in the North Caucasus.[31] As a consequence of the Circassian genocide, which was perpetrated by the Russian Empire in the 19th century during the Russo-Circassian War, most Circassians were exiled from their homeland in Circassia to modern-day Turkey and the rest of the Middle East, where the majority of them are concentrated today.[32] The Circassian languages, a subdivision of the Northwest Caucasian language family, are the shared ancestral languages of the Circassian people.[33] Islam has been the dominant religion among the Circassian populace since its injection into the region in the 17th century through the influence of the Ottoman Empire, although Christianity and the Circassian indigenous faith have maintained themselves as a significant minority.[34] Circassia has been subject to repeated invasions since ancient times; its isolated terrain coupled with the strategic value that external societies have placed on the region have shaped the Circassian national identity to a large extent.

Until the 20th century, the majority of Circassians spoke the Circassian languages, with two main dialects (West Circassian and East Circassian) and numerous sub-dialects. The Circassian languages have been largely sidelined in usage due to assimilation policies and intermarriages with other ethnic groups. Today, approximately 40–50 percent of Circassians speak the Circassian languages; the remaining majority speak Turkish, Russian, English, Arabic and Hebrew. The majority of Circassians are Sunni Muslims.[34]

The Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization estimated in the early 1990s that there are as many as 3.7 million Circassians in diaspora (in over 50 countries)[35] outside of the titular Circassian republics (meaning that only one in seven ethnic Circassians lives in their homeland) and that, of these 3.7 million, more than 2 million live in Turkey.[35] An additional 700,000 live in Russia; over 300,000 reside in the countries of the Levant (mostly in Jordan and in Syria with a sizable population in Israel) as well as in Iraq; some 50,000 live in Western Europe and in the United States.

The term "Circassian" traditionally includes the twelve historic tribes of Circassia: the Abzakh, the Besleney, the Bzhedugh, the Hatuqway, the Kabarday, the Mamkhegh, the Natukhaj, the Shapsugh, the Chemirgoy, the Ubykh, the Yegeruqway and the Zhaney.[36] Each star on the Circassian national flag represents one tribe.

Historical Circassia has been divided by Soviet and Russian administrations into the modern-day republics of Adygea, Kabardino-Balkaria, Karachay-Cherkessia and Krasnodar Krai as well as southwestern parts of Stavropol Krai. Accordingly, Circassians have also been designated as the following: Adygeans in Adygea, Kabardians in Kabardino-Balkaria, Cherkess in Karachay-Cherkessia and Shapsug in Krasnodar Krai, although all four are essentially the same people. Today, approximately 800,000 Circassians remain in historical Circassia while 4,500,000 live elsewhere

Circassian Chicken or in Turkish "Çerkez Tavuğu" is a classic Circassian dish, adopted by the Ottoman - Turkish cuisine. The Circassians were tribal folk historically inhabiting the land separating the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. Circassian chicken made its way into Turkish cuisine during the Ottoman period when the Ottoman Empire controlled much of this region.

Poached and shredded chicken served with a creamy and spicy walnut sauce, it was typically served as a main course, but it became also popular as an appetizer or meze served for the feasts. It can be also a great alternative to chicken salad and delicious filling for the sandwiches.

(20 Aug 2012) LEAD-IN:
The fighting in Syria is spilling out across the Middle East as refugees flee.
People from one ethnic group, the Circassians are escaping to Russia to find their long lost ancestors in the North Caucasus.
In the 1860s they fled to Syria to escape fighting in their ancestral homeland, and now they are trying to return.
STORYLINE:
Rim Kray is a refugee from Aleppo in Syria, and now she resides in this small, cramped room with her two sons.
She is living in a single room in a sanatorium in Nalchik in Russia's Caucasus region.
The refugee from Aleppo says she was worried for her two sons' safety, so the family left Syria for Russia.
"We were afraid of bombings and armed people who were attacking. So because of the kids we had to leave everything we had there and go away," she says.
In the 1860s many Circassians such as Kray's ancestors fled Russia.
The Circassians fiercely resisted the Russian czarist conquest that ended in the 1860s after decades of scorched-earth warfare, mass killings or expulsions that some historians and politicians consider genocide.
Now, hundreds of Circassians are fleeing war-torn Syria for this remote Russian region of soaring peaks and lush forests.
In the coming months, thousands more are expected to arrive in Kabardino-Balkariya, a Caucasus province the size of Maryland with a population of less than 900,000, two-thirds of which is ethnic Circassian.
Circassians were widely dispersed in the Russian expulsions.
An estimated 2 million live in Turkey, another 100,000 in Syria and other sizable populations are in Jordan and the United States. But their sense of ethnic unity remains strong and the pull of their homeland compelling.
The region they have come back to is afflicted by violence, too. The Caucasus republics are plagued by an Islamic insurgency that spread from Chechnya's separatist wars.
A brazen 2005 raid of Islamists on Nalchik left 130 people dead, and Kabardino-Balkariya still experiences occasional small clashes.
Despite the violence, Circassians say they feel comfortable in their ancestral homeland.
But the refugees arriving say the economic prospects in the area are greater than in the Middle East.
Natai al-Sharkas, a 35-year-old Syrian refugee from Damascus says some of the conflict in the Caucasus are similar to the Middle East.
Al Sharkas's great-grandfather Koushoukou, his brother and two cousins were forcibly drafted and sent to the Russian-Turkish war of the late 1870s.
They had to fight Ottoman Turks - fellow Muslims whose sultans supported Circassian resistance and provided refuge for hundreds of thousands of Circassians. After killing his officer in Bulgaria, Koushoukou joined the Turkish military and ended his life in Damascus - part of Ottoman Turkey at the time.
Al Sharkas, which means Circassian in Arabic, used a network of family connections, along with Facebook, to find relatives in Kabardino-Balkariya and other parts of Russia.
He encourages his Syrian relatives to follow him to the Caucasus, although now, because of the fighting, it hardly seems possible.
"It's the same situation in the Middle East, you know, you always have problems almost everywhere, such kind of problems. If it's not some Islamic insurgency, so it will be mafia and criminal activities. So, everywhere in the world you have this situation. The major problem is the economical problem, I believe, and here, I think that Caucasus has the huge opportunity to be developed and to be a very developed area," says al-Sharkas.
Without residence and work permits, they will have to leave the country when their visas expire.
