1864 - The Circassian Tragedy

Kamyl - Circassian (Adyghe) native flute.
Circassians are the folk of Caucasus with ancient history and rich musical culture.
Sound creation is complicated, video tutor is included. Lips and tooth are in use.
Instrument has rich tembre. Scale range consist about two octaves.

Камыль, или по-адыгски къамыл.
Традиционная флейта адыгов (черкесов). Относится к классу открытых длинномензурных флейт.
Эта флейта обладает насыщенным тембром. В звукоизвлечении участвуют язык, зубы и губа.
Имеет более чем полторы октавы диатонического диапазона. Звукоряд основан на чередовании фригийского тетрахорда.

Традиция игры на камыле успешно сохранилась до наших дней на территории Адыгеи. В наши дни инструмент переживает активное возрождение среди черкесской молодежи.
Общепринятым стандартом сегодня является инструмент из металла. С XIX века, судя по этнографическим описаниям, камыль изготовлялся из доступных музыкантам металлических трубок: медь, латунь, ружейные стволы.
Родственные инструменты: карачаево-балкарский сыбызгъы, абхазский ачарпын, осетинский уадындз, башкирский курай, персидский ней, турецкий кавал, грузинский пастуший саламури.

The aim of any Circassian must be telling the free world about our history and values, despite it is a hard job, which needs a continuous and dedicated efforts. I can remember before nearly 4 years from now and to be precise in January 2009, that the voice of the Circassians was one of the earliest voices that congratulated the establishment of Al-Jazeera Documentary, and I urged the channel to make a documentary program about the Circassians, their glories, in addition to their resistance to preserve their traditions, history, and values, as can be clearly seen in comment number (2), and I urged them again after 1.5 years in May 2010 as can be clearly seen in comment number (103) in the following link:

Now we are in June 2013, and I want to thank God that our voices were listened by the channel; by preparing the documentary file titled "Winter of Discontent",

Today, 25 April, marks Circassian Flag Day. The elegant and aesthetically pleasing Circassian (Cherkess) flag serves not only as the national symbol of the Republic of Adyghea but also as the emblem for all Circassians, signifying their transnational spiritual and cultural unity.

There are five recognized languages in the Northwest Caucasian family: Abkhaz, Abaza, Kabardian or East Circassian, Adyghe or West Circassian, and Ubykh.
Adyghe is one of the more widely spoken Northwest Caucasian languages. It has 500,000 speakers in Russia, where it is official in the Republic of Adygea, the Middle East, Turkey, Jordan, Syria, Iraq, and Israel. There is even a small community in the United States. Four main dialects are recognised: Temirgoy, Abadzekh, Shapsugh and Bzhedugh, as well as many minor ones such as Hakuchi spoken by the last speakers of Ubykh in Turkey. Adyghe has many consonants: between 50 and 60 consonants in the various Adyghe dialects but it has only three phonemic vowels. Its consonants and consonant clusters are less complex than the Abkhaz–Abaza dialects.
Abkhaz has 100,000 speakers in Abkhazia (a de facto independent republic, but a de jure autonomous entity within Georgia), where it is the official language, and an unknown number of speakers in Turkey. It has been a literary language from the beginning of the 20th century. Abkhaz and Abaza may be said to be dialects of the same language, but each preserves phonemes which the other has lost. Abkhaz is characterised by unusual consonant clusters and one of the world's smallest vowel inventories: It has only two distinctive vowels, an open vowel /a/ and a mid vowel /ə/. Next to palatalized or labialized consonants, /a/ is realized as [e] or [o], and /ə/ as [i] or [u]. There are three major dialects: Abzhuy and Bzyp in Abkhazia and Sadz in Turkey.
