Адыги (или черкесы) — этническая группа Северо-Западного Кавказа. Проживают на территории Адыгеи (западные черкесы, адыгейцы), Кабардино-Балкарии (восточные черкесы, кабардинцы), Карачаево-Черкесии (центральные черкесы), Краснодарского (шапсуги) и Ставропольского края. За пределами России наиболее многочисленны в Турции. Говорят на адыгских языках.Генетически черкесы наиболее близки к абхазам и формируют абхазо-адыгскую (западную) ветвь северокавказской семьи. Менее выраженная, но прослеживаемая генетическая связь наблюдается у адыгов с осетинами. На формирование генетических различий между этническими группами на Кавказе оказывали влияние не только географические, но и лингвистические особенности. Так, черкесы и кабардинцы географически находятся между осетинами и адыгейцами. Но из-за сходного языка и культуры с адыгейцами, поток генов от них превышал поток генов от осетин, приводя к более однородной генетической структуре адыгов как группы народов.

This May, the Circassian minority in Turkey marked a solemn anniversary. The Russian Empire deported the Circassians 155 years ago from their homeland in the northeastern shores of the Black Sea. Most of the Circassian exiles were absorbed into the Ottoman Empire, settling as far away as present-day Jordan. We take a look at their centuries old traditions that remain very much alive today.

But now many of them are trying to return to their ancestral homeland.
