A brief documentation of the morning of Eid al-Adha (Kurman Bayram) as seen in the Circassian village of Reihania , Israel (September 2017).
It begins with the children gathering at six-thirty in the morning in the old village center, waiting patiently until the end of the holiday
prayer, and immediately starts with the traditional round where the families stand outside the homes and give a holiday gift to each child.
Anyone who manages to complete the full round in all the streets of the village promises to return home with a wallet full of coins.
The men at the same time visit all three cemeteries in the settlement.
A person who decides to sacrifice an animal (usually a cow or sheep) will start work immediately after the visit to the cemeteries and will usually receive help from family members and friends. A large portion of the meat is distributed to relatives and elderly residents of the community. This section of the day is usually ended with BBQ of the finest parts of the animal. The rest of the day is spent on visiting family and friends.
