147th anniversary of Circassian genocide marked today
147th anniversary of Russia`s genocide of Circassian people is marked today. On May 21, 1864 Russian troops destroyed most part of Circassian fighting for freedom and their kindred Ubykh people.
Moscow later named Krasnaya Polyana the site where the fights were taking place.
After the fights, the empire troops burnt down Circassian villages and exiled the 2467 families that survived to Turkey. Hundreds of children, women and old people died on the way to Turkey.
After 1864, during a century and a half, The Circassian people had been urging Moscow and the world society to recognize the genocide but no results followed.
Only Georgia`s parliament adopted the historic decision on Friday (May 20). Georgian lawmakers unanimously supported the document on Genocide of Small Caucasian Nation.
According to the resolution, the Georgian lawmakers also urge for granting millions of Circassians refugee status.
Representatives of Circassian Diasporas were also attending the historic voting in Georgia`s parliament yesterday.
Georgian MPs along with experts had been working on researching the facts of genocide during one year.
The document adopted by the Georgian parliament will be sent to parliaments of other countries as well.
