Circassian beauties, or Moss-haired girls as they were sometimes known, reflect a curious legacy of racial stereotyping and sexual titillation. Racial theories of the mid 19th century held that the people living in the Circassian mountains near the Black Sea were examples of the purest stock of the Caucasian race. Legend had it that the Circassians produced the worlds most beautiful white women, who were consequently in great demand for the harems of Turkish sultans.

The long shadow of slavery can also be discerned in this hybrid depiction. American audiences were both intrigued and horrified, given their false association of slavery with Africans, by the fact that Circassian women were among the most sought-after concubines in the Sultans harem - hence the need to make them appear somewhat African. Both African slaves and Circassian slaves were subject to sexual exploitation and this is the point of contact that played so powerfully on white Americans imagination, wrote philosophy professor Gregory Fried.

Finally! I met Kashi from @persianyoga 🙏🏻 I’ve not been overly exposed to the Persian form of wrestling training called ‘Palhavani’.

This was my first meeting with an actual follower of the original tradition and I must say that I’m impressed. We went through a tough workout which incorporated many different tools and modalities challenging strength, mobility, agility, balance, and coordination. In this video you’ll see me attempt the 32kg pair which Kashi gave to me as a challenge (something I feel like he likes to do haha). I succeeded for one count. This is the heaviest Persian Meel I’ve ever swung and it felt great. Hoping to meet again this time in Australia to get a few more counts in with these beasts 🤯

A big thanks to @persianyoga for his generous share of knowledge and skills. What an amazing world we live in ❤️

Ahmad Ai - The Circassian Tragedy (1864)

Every year the Circassian community remembers May 21, 1864. The day we commemorate the Circassian Genocide. Following a 100-year war with Russia, our ancestors were defeated and forced to leave our homeland. The end of the war wasn’t the end of our suffering though. Our exodus was marked with starvation, disease, and death.

I’m not a big fan of living in the past, but I do believe in learning from history. I mention this today because I believe if we're looking at these tragedies in the wrong way, and if we change how we look at them we'll so much more positive change and personal satisfaction

Most if not all groups have tragic events like this in their history. The Jewish Genocide, the Armenian Genocide, the genocide of the Native Americans, the slaves brought to the West from Africa, and the list goes on. Including more recent tragedies like 9/11.

These commemorations bring us together, to remember and grieve. There’s also usually some blame directed at another group, and maybe even a plea for them to make things right. We then walk away for another year, with little to nothing changed.

Waiting for someone else to solve our problems is a huge missed opportunity. Entrepreneurship taught me nobody cares about me and my business more than me, whether customers or employees. Similarly, nobody cares about our traumas and genocides more than us. So, if we’re waiting for justice, we’re going to wait a long time.

Better yet why not take this time, these emotions, this desire to see the wrongs made right, and do something about it. So, what can we do to make things better? Can we launch some program or initiative to improve the situation of our communities? Can we partner with others to do something even bigger? Are others already doing great work that inspires us, that we can donate our time or money to support? There are so many options, for all types of lifestyles and preferences.

I love the idea of taking wrongs and making them right. Taking powerlessness and turning it into empowerment. Taking pain and turning it into joy and happiness.

How about you? Please share ways you’ve turned wrongs and worked to make them right?

Info: The land of Caucasus is located between the Pontic - Caspian steppe and Anatolia. Through the history it is inhabited by various nomadic populations such as Sarmatians, Scythians, Turks, Slavs, Mongolians and the native Caucasian populations such as Circassians, Georgians, Chechens, Lezgins and Armenians. Therefore, the culture of Caucasus has been affected by both nomadic and agricultural civilizations. There are historical findings that the various dances with blades were performed by Scythians since B.C.E. 2000s and later the Scythian's culture was combined with Turkic - Hunnic - Ugric cultures. After the collapse of the Mongolian Empire, the nomadic Turkic Kazakhs and Slavic Ukrainian populations have been combined. The new integrated population has been called as the Cossacks (meaning Kazakh in Slavic languages).

The blade dances of this video are some examples of Flankirovka, Khorumi and Perkhuli. Flankirovka is an art of spinning sabers (mostly Shashka) while dancing, originating from Caucasus and today performed by mostly Cossacks. Shashka is a Circassian sword and means "long knife" in Adyghe language. The music of the video is called Sinane Daxe, meaning "my mother" in Adyghe language. The performers in the video are Georgian, Ukrainian, Russian, Circassian, Tatar, Italian and French.

Note: If you are in the video and want to be mentioned or advertise your page, contact me, thus I can add your link.

“The Circassian Cavaliers of the Caucasus”

A French film by Jean Paul Blondeau. Presented by Jean Bertho. subtitled in English by the Centre for Circassian Studies.

The mountain pastures where the famous Kabardian horses and intrepid Circassian horsemen share a free, yet very harsh, existence – the life of the “Cavaliers of the Caucasus”.

We expect to be endlessly surprised by the equine exploits of the cavaliers of the Caucasus…

For the peoples of the Caucasus, song and dance are a gift from Heaven…

Utterly exotic and stunning…

They live the life of herder cavaliers in all its aspects…

“The Kabardian Horse”

These horses are world-famous for their beauty, hardiness, and the surety of their feet on treacherous mountainous terrain.

They live in an extensive area of 20,000 hectares (200 km²) – a domain which sharply varies from 300 to almost six thousand metres in height. This is a vast dominion of lofty mountains, precipitous hills and gorges, and plateaus, all teaming with precipitous mountain streams and thunderous waterfalls...
