Circassian folk music by Nalmes.

Dance of the Anatolian Circassians or locally known as Sheshen is a very popular Circassian dance performed in every wedding and celebration ceremony. Its origin is not known clearly, but modern versions are inspired by Circassians living in Turkey. It has a moderate pace although there are some faster versions mixed with Lezginka in some regions.

Every couple performs the dance inside a wide circle surrounded by the crowd and guests. Couples take the floor one by one and show their skills to the community. The man needs to do his best to get the woman's attention and the crowd's appreciation. The other men in the circle encourage and support him during the dance with cheers and chants. Although there are some basic elements, custom improvisations are very important. Performers should not repeat other people's patterns and they have to be creative because individual compositions are seen as a signature for the person. Like all other Circassian dances, the dance duration depends on the woman and keeps going on until she decides to finish it. It's accepted a very rude behavior if the man leaves the scene first.

Circassians are the descendants of an ancient European people native to Circassia. Today, most Circassians live outside their historical homeland. Their language belongs to the Pontic languages family (also called Abkhazo-Adyghean or Northwest Caucasian).

Cold eyes, warm hearts!

Circassian women, famous for their elegance, were historically characterised by their unusual pale skin, prominent cheekbones, wasp waist, waist-length hair and tall height. Many of them had blue or green eyes and blond or red hair, whereas others had dark hair with light complexions. With similar physical traits, Circassian men were strong and skilled warriors. In this video, however, you will find some 20th- and 21st-century people with total or partial (mostly predominant) ancestry from Circassia, especially those who identify with that ancestry.

The only motivation to upload this video is to spread the word that Circassians are not an extinct people. Certain Adyghe tribes, which are thought to be extinct by some because their members were completely expelled from historical Circassia, are still alive but in diaspora. In fact, there are millions of people with total Adyghe ancestry who live in diaspora than in the historical homeland. Just as expectedly, Circassians are quite loyal to the countries where they live, but they always remember the old Land — Адыгэ Хэку.

One of the most ancient languages of Eastern Europe, the Circassian language belongs to the Abazgi–Adyghe language isolate family. There are two written (mutually-intelligible) Circassian (aka Adyghe) dialects: Lowland Adyghe (Кӏах Адыгабзэ) and Kabardian Adyghe (Къэбэрдей Адыгэбзэ). It is much easier for the speaker of the latter (spoken in this video) to understand the former.

The Abzakh kept up their valiant resistance against Russian encroachment into their homeland for decades. A sanguine war raged in Abzakhia that resulted in the surrender of the Abzakh by the end of 1863. The decimated Abzakh were subsequently subjected to mass expulsion. Only a small rump of the once-mighty nation-tribe remained in the Caucasus.
