What on Earth happened to the Circassians? The Caucasus is an interesting region with a load of many diverse and unique peoples such as the Armenians, Georgians and Azerbaijanis, but what about the groups that you probably haven't heard of? Thousands of years before the present day, different peoples inhabited parts of Europe and the Near East who, linguistically-speaking, are entirely unrelated to the groups we see there today. The Circassians are an example of such an ancient people.

In today's video we're going to be looking at the history and culture of the Circassians and some of the surrounding Caucasian natives like the Abkhaz, Chechens, Ingush and Dagestanis. Thanks for watching!

Belonging to the Northwest Caucasian language family, the Circassian language group is comprised of the West Circassian language, Adyghe, and the East Circassian language, Kabardian. Adyghe is spoken by approximately 575,000 people and Kabardian is spoken by around 1.6 million people. Yenal is fluent in five Northwest Caucasian languages and dialects, all of which he uses in this video: Shapsug (a Black Sea coast dialect of Adyghe), Bzhedug (a Kuban River dialect of Adyghe), Abkhaz (a Northwest Caucasian language), Karbadian (homeland dialect), and Karbadian (diaspora dialect). There is a strong consensus among the linguistic community that Adyghe and Kabardian are typologically distinct languages; however, the local terms for these languages refer to them as dialects.

On this day 157 years ago, one of the most brutal military campaigns in modern history came to an end with the occupation of Circassia and the forced exodus of what was left of the Circassian nation after 101 years of defending their homeland from the Russian invaders. With more than 90% of the Circassian nation killed or forcefully expelled to what was then the Ottoman Empire, the atrocities committed during this war by the Russian invaders is considered by many the worst genocide in modern history. Circassia’s fallen heroes and the tragedy of ethnic cleansing may be unknown to many, but to Circassians, 21 May 1864 will never be forgotten.

Likewise a great number of Circassians settled upon Dnieper and Sniporid rivers in Ukraine (Cherkasy & Poltava provinces), first in 14th century (founded Cherkasy, Chyhyryn, Pyatyhortsi). So, emblem of Chyhyryn, cossack capital of Ukraine has same 3 Circassian arrows as national flag of Circassia. In general, Dnieper Ukrainians and Ukrainians Zaporozhian cossacks were called and referred Cherkasy (Circassians, just as Caucasus Circassians) by Moscow authorities in 16 - 17 th centuries...

Then again in Podolian region of Ukraine in the 16th century, when 5 Circassian kings with 300 soldiers moved to Ukraine upon the invitation of Polish king (as Ukraine was part of Poland then). They even formed famous Piatihortsy regiment (pancerny) in Polish royal army, famous for its bravery. Likewise a number of Circassian warriors from tribe Zhane (Christian Circassians) followed Ukrainian cossack leader Dmytro Bayda-Vyshnevetsky to found Zaporozhian Sich, the seat of Ukrainian cossackdom. Ukrainian linguist Tyshchenko name the following Caucasian placenames in Ukraine: Zanky (Nizhyn dist.), Tushebyn (Rivne reg.), Koverdyna (from Circassian Kabarda tribe, Shyshaky dist., Poltava reg.), Abazivka (Poltava dist. & Kharkiv reg, from Abazin people), Kivshuvata (south Kyiv reg.) , Lazky (from Laz people), Tsukury (from Tsakhur people), Pslo, Psolia, Vorskla, Subot and Ukrainian words of Caucasian origin like kuntush, habardyn, svynets, skovoroda, kuvalda, zhrabno, zubr, chereshnia, osokir, vyno, oliya, moroka, mech, sharpaty.

It is very likely that Ukrainian hetman Ivan Mazepa (one of the greatest leaders of Ukraine from 17th cen.) was also of Circassian origin (of Christian Circassians), as his last name is Circassian (Mazepe means "early moon"). Christian Circassians were escaping into Ukraine, after Tatars and Turks started forceful islamization of Christian Circassians from the late 15th cen. In Ukraine, lords of Kyiv lands used them as southern border guards - the border with Crimean Khanate was in Ukrainian steppe then, just south from modern Cherkasy. It is also said that popular Ukrainian last name Shevchenko is likewise Circassian. Shevdzhens were Circassian Christian priests and -ko means son in Circassian. In general, there is no doubt that Dnieper Ukrainians absorbed a fair amount of these Christian Circassians immigrants.

I wanted to share with you all the lovely late morning through the evening.

Adam and Amjad , dear friends from Kfar Kamah – northern village of Circassians people brough Amjad Accordion for fixing it.
During the traditional coffee accompanied with Circassians chees and my home made Labane Chees, I was briefed about the Circassians music…

There are several sources for the music, the obvious one from the Jordan Circassians people around Amman, their great composer for most melodies came from there is Abidat Omar.
It is easy to identify this music, it is played with a long base accompany the melody.
Some musicians will alter , and add Harmony to comply with the melody.
Amjad is playing the accordion while his toe is holding the accordion right frame.
Adam is just improvising around the melody … sometime stretches the harmony to the extreme(LOL)
